MISSISSIPPI VOLUNTEER LAWYERS PROJECT
Welcome to the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project (MVLP)! MVLP is a nonprofit 501(c)3 program of The Mississippi Bar Associationand Mississippi Legal Services Programs. More than 1,900 Mississippi attorneys are signed up to volunteer their time and expertise to participate in the Project, and as a result, more than 8,000 low income citizens are assisted by the Project each year.
The challenge is to provide pro bono civil legal services to benefit low income people in Mississippi. MVLP identifies areas of legal need, develop projects to meet these needs, and recruit volunteer lawyers and law firms to provide the needed legal services.
Pro Bono leverages private attorney resources to provide legal assistance to eligible low-income people with important civil legal matters where counsel is otherwise unavailable. By the nature of the program--its reliance on volunteers--the Pro Bono Program is equipped to handle only those cases where clients are capable of cooperating with their attorneys. The goal is to promote the economic stability and safety of families, children and individuals and to help foster client self-sufficiency.
Except in unusual circumstances or through special projects, Pro Bono is not designed to operate as a referral service for emergencies and in most instances will decline cases based on time limitations.
By providing pro bono legal services to poor people in our state, we strive to fulfill the highest aspirations of the legal profession.
