Program News Header > Curtis Coker Access To Justice Winner 2008-09 - Beau Cole, Esq.

Beau is a member of the Magnolia Bar Association, Hinds County Bar Association, Jackson Young Lawyers Diversity Committee, Charles Clark Inns of Court and volunteer for The Mississippi Bar's Mock Trial Competition.  He is a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and he volunteers in various community activities through his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, Incorporated.  He served as a board member of New Life for Women, Inc., a nonprofit alcohol and drug recovery center.

With encouragement from The Pro Bono Manual Project  liaison and pro bono counsel, Walter Boone, last year was Beau's first year of serious work with the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project (MVLP).  In making the step to join with MVLP, he had no idea how many cases he would accept and did not keep a close eye on the number of hours he was contributing.  Tracking is what MVLP does. He simply wanted to help indigent people because he feels that it is his "social and professional responsibility to serve those who cannot help themselves navigate our state's legal waters."

What is important to note is that on average, most lengthy MVLP cases last around 20 hours.  Cases lasting more than 50 hours are rare, and those for which an attorney donates over 100 hours are nearly unheard of.  Beau's work is truly awesome in that during his short tenure with MVLP he has already donated more than 125 hours on ten (10) different pro bono cases - with a few cases still active.  His hard work, commitment, and enthusiasm for advancing justice are momentous and he simply says that he is "honored to work with the program and hope that he can encourage others to give a little more."
